Overclocking the G3258 on a Gigabyte H81M-HD3 (F6) with Stock Cooler – A Quick Review


The Intel G2358 has wow-ed the world with cheap and solid 2 Core no-frills prestanda for gaming and day to day office work. However the fact that it overclocks really well has peaked the interest for this little cpu even further. Actually it’s not that great UNLESS you overclock it from the stock 3.2 GHz.

The problem with overclocking the G3258 is that it previously required  motherboards with Z87 or H87 chipsets, (or better) the not so cheap ones that is.

In this review we are looking at combining the cheaper G3258 with a Gigabyte H81M-HD3 micro ATX motherboard, and trying to overclock the CPU.

Let’s see how it goes shall we?

Prerequisites – BIOS Update

To start off, we need to upgrade the H81M-HD3 with the latest greatest bios we can find. Namely (at the time of writing) the F6.

F6 added support for intel K-processors, which is, as far as I can understand it, what I have bought. Now I won’t go in to how flashing is done in minuscule detail, but basically you download the updated BIOS file from gigabyte’s homepage, put it on a usb stick and load it into the BIOS and restart.

The incredibly annoying UEFI BIOS

First startup – No Luck

The first startup with BIOS F6 gave me the UEFI bios interface, that seriously confuses me, however I managed to find what I was looking for, the overclocking settings. What I immediately knew was that I needed to up the CPU voltage to 1.2V and above to overclock this chip, and 1.2V was maximum what the H81M let me achieve. That’s a roof, and a problem.

I started with Vcore 1.2v and left all other voltage settings on AUTO. I upped the clock ratio to 40, (which would give me 4.0GHz) and rebooted. – Nothing happened, it did not start, but after a while it booted to fail safe settings.

Okay, so that was no good.

After this I tinkered a bit with lower clock speeds and managed to get some overclocking going, but not near 4GHz or above.

Crap, maybe I should have bought a more expensive motherboard…

Then I had a brilliant idea

The BIOS had some other voltage settings besides VCore, namely something called VRIN and CPU Ring Voltage.

I figured it was worth a try and I let the…

– VRIN settings stay at AUTO, and I maxed the…
– CPU Ring Voltage to 1.149V
– Vcore still maxed at 1.2
– Clock ratio 40

Low and behold! The thing started, booted up to windows and was running at 4.0GHz! At least that´s something (800MHz overclock).

I ran the Intel burn test and it made it trough 10 times with no BSOD. Goodie!

So I wanted to go higher

Of course I wanted to go higher! I figured I’d max out all the voltages I could change that had to do with the CPU.
– VRIN at 1.9
– CPU Ring Voltage to 1.149, and
– VCore 1.2
– Clock Ratio 42

With the clock ratio to 42, it worked! It booted to windows and the 4.2GHz (1GHz overclock) was achieved! Not bad since it is a 30% overclocking of the CPU.

The Intel Burn Test was also successful and the machine was for all intents and purposes stable.


So I wanted to go even higher

More then, perhaps? Well I had to find out!

I set the Clock ratio to 44 and it booted at 4.4GHz, but during the Intel Burn Test, it BSOD:ed with error 124, same thing with clock ratio 4.3

It seems with the stock cooler and this chipset, 4.2GHz is the practical limit.

I’m going to upgrade my cooler a bit to a Zalman CNPS5X and see if that helps, so stay tuned for updates to this post. I will also try to lower VRIN and CPU Ring Voltage to see how much further I can go with those settings while still keeping the CPU happy.

Conclusion (On stock cooler)

The G3258 can be overclocked about 1GHz on the Gigabyte H81M, but for higher speeds at least a better than stock cooler is needed, and considering the motherboard was maxed out as far as cpu voltage settings goes when the cpu reached 4.2GHz, this seems to be the limit for this motherboard/cpu combo. Since some CPU’s clock easier than others, your mileage may vary. The question of the sagging floors in the WTC.

Something just came to mind that I cannot explain. Maybe someone with structural engineering skills kan explain this to me.

According to NIST, as far as I’m right here, part of the collapse of the twin towers was the fact that the floors sagged due to heat, and this pulled in with considerable force on the outer columns.

Can someone please explain to me how a sagging (softer) floor can pull more inwards on a perimeter column than a straight one? We are not adding any force to the floor, it just expands as it is no longer as rigid. The load on the point where it is connected to the perimeter column must be the same.

Of course it would be different if the sagging was due to added weight (downward force) to the floor, but this is not the case.

If i hang a narrow line between two small trees and I grab onto it and hang, it gives way and there is some pull on the trees as well as some sag in the line. If I do the same with a thicker line it does not give way that much, but shouldn’t the pull on the trees be the same? They are supporting the same weight. (Mine)

I cannot wrap my mind around this theory. I bet it has something to do with vectors though 🙂


Win7 – Philips Toucam Windows 7 Driver fix – Problem solved! – Post updated for 64 bit Windows7

I had problems using my old Philips TouCam Pro with Win7 since Philips does not offer any drivers for it. I read somewhere that you could hack some drivers but that sounded so complicated.

Here is a driver that works with the TouCam in Win7 (at least 32-bit) right out of the box. Just do like this:

Win7 32-bit procedure, see further down for the Win7 64-bit instructions

1. Download the driver package (click the drive icon under Téléchargement, which is french for download)

2. Unzip the files to a folder of your choice

3. Plug in your toucam, cancel the automatic driver installation window that pops up.

4. Open the Windows 7 Control panel, in the search field there, type ” device ” to find the device manager, open it.

5. Find your unrecognized device in the list, right-click on it and choose “update driver software”, “browse my computer for software” and browse to your folder where you unzipped the files. Click next, ignore the warning and the driver installs.


Win7 x64 procedure: (Credits go to kapyxx! thanx man/woman! 😉 )

1 – Download the Windows 7 drivers for your Philips Webcam SPC900NC VGA CCD with Pixel Plus and install them.


2 – In C: \ Program Files (x86) \ Philips \ Philips SPC900NC PC Camera edit files with Notepad:

To view the line number, select the notepad menu – View – Status Bar, Word Wrap to be disabled if necessary.

In Camvid40.inf:
Line 66 should be replaced with:
% USBVid.DeviceDesc% = USBVidx86, USB \ VID_0471 & PID_0311 & MI_00 [/ code]

Line 69 should be replaced with:
% USBVid.DeviceDesc% = USBVidXp64, USB \ VID_0471 & PID_0311 & MI_00 [/ code]

Line 72 should be replaced with:
% USBVid.DeviceDesc% = USBVidVista64, USB \ VID_0471 & PID _0311 & MI_00 [/ code]

Edit the file with Notepad SPC900.txt

replace line # 2 with:
USB \ VID_0471 & PID_0311 & MI_00 [/ code]

Save and close. (If You Can not save copy the files to another location, edit them and then copy Them back and select “Copy and Replace”

In device manager there should be an unknown device with exclamation mark.
Update driver and select the path: C: \ Program Files (x86) \ Philips \ Philips SPC900NC PC Camera driver will be installed ..

Strange cloud formation over Moscow

Have a look at this. This phenomena happened Wednesday October 7th over Moscow.

I don’t know what it is, but it sure looks very strange. Not that much info out on it yet. However the scientists are blaming cold and warm fronts meeting, and the sun shining from a certain direction. It doesn’t seem that likely to me but then again I’m no meterologist.

It’s an interesting phenomena whatever caused it. The odds of nature forming something that precise in such a chaotic system as cloud formation seems a bit far fetched to me.

What do you guys think?

External monitor flicker, laptop ground loop problem solved

This is one of my most visited posts, so i decided to make an updated version.(2011.02.18)

DISCLAIMER, this is a “quick and dirty” fix that works, and might not be recommended by an electrician, and might be against new electricity safety guidelines. I am not an electrician, I just know this works, but you are doing it on your own risk. That said, here we go:

Are you having problems with a flickering external monitor on your laptop?

Does the flicker go away if you remove the laptop charger?

If you answered yes to the above questions, you probably have a ground loop or ground between the laptop and the monitor.

This is because in the best situation we would like to have only one ground point in any system. Since your laptop is grounded and your monitor is grounded, and we connect these two with a cable, we are essentially creating a loop antenna. This “antenna” picks up noise from the electric system and this is what affects the analog signal on the monitor. This problem can also create an audio hum in your soundcard.

What you need to do is completely disable the ground for one of these devices. For example the monitor. If you are using a European 240V connector just put some scotch tape over the metal strips on the sides of the connector in the socket, that is the ground. Check that the tape does not break when the connector is inserted. You might have to put several layers of tape on the connector. Your monitor will still be grounded, as long as it is connected to the laptop with a VGA or DVI cable.


If you have other connector types you can take a spare power cable and remove the ground prong for the monitor, or you could just use an adapter that only has 2 prongs but accepts three, like this one:

 Grounding Adapter 3-Prong to 2-Prong AC Wall Outlet Polarized Electrical power Grounded Grounding Adapter 3 Prong Outlet Plug to 2 Prong, AC Ground Wire Plug Adapter, Part # 905-100

After this the flickering should go away.

BEWARE your monitor is now ungrounded by itself, so don’t use it in the bath-tub.

Phantom Alert, Speed camera warning system

Police Hate Them. Drivers Love Them. New Invention Uses GPS to Locate Police Speed Traps. 100% legal.

Phantom alert is a database of locations in North America where “enforcement cameras” are placed. Similar systems are available for Europe, and probably the rest of the world. Loading the database onto your GPS in your car gives you alerts whenever you are approaching a speed-camera or red-light camera that is placed along the roads.

This alert has several benefits. One, You will probably slow down. Two, you will not get a ticket, Three, You will probably feel great because you feel you are “cheating the system” and sticking it to the man.

“The system gives you enough time to correct any dopey thing you’re about to do,” said Brooklyn subway conductor John Carlson, 49, who bought the software from Pennsylvania-based PhantomAlert last year, and said it “absolutely” has helped him avoid tickets.

Any complaints from law enforcement towards this technique can only come from one source.


If that is the case, then the government is not trying to save lives with the speed cameras, they are trying to make money on tickets. So be observant on the debate to follow.
