Crysis engine in Flight Simulator

March 8, 2008 mrgnome 4 comments

When is it coming? A new engine for Microsoft’s flight simulator. Looking at the available engines today, one engine really stansds out as far as georendering goes, and that is the CryEngine2 from Crysis.

Microsoft is really lagging behind with their graphics in  FSX. Slow, ugly and blurry.

Imagine an approach to an island in FSXI looking like this:

Now it looks like this:

Would Microsoft consider buying the Crysis engine for their product line? Probably not. Do they have the technical knowledge to make something similar themselves. I  think so. Do they want to enhance graphics like this in FS_? I don’t know. Would the FS_-community want better ground rendering? Probably not all of them, but I would!

So when is the next installment of Microsoft flight simulator gonna be? I don’t know. However they really need to make a new enginge from scratch to be able to keep up on the graphics side. I’m looking forward to it, but until then I’m sticking to FS9. Not for the grahics, but for smoothness. FSX is an abomination.

Bring back Stage6!

March 8, 2008 mrgnome 2 comments

Stage6 is sadly missing, and I just wanted everyone to know that there is a petition to sign for people who want it back online again. The petition is at “http://www.petitiononline.com/pros599/petition.html”

According to some sources the reason for closing stage6 was a combination of bad leadership, internal schisms in the board of directors, and not so much the running costs which were compensated by revenue from the yahoo toolbar included in the divx bundle. Shutting down a thriving community with millions of users, and a copious amount of visits every day creating bad feelnings towards the divx brand is just crazy, according to me.  Even if Stage6 would have not given divx any profit, the sheer number of people using it, spreading the divx-word and the general goodwill of the company would have been a great feather in the hat for DivX.  Now the opposite have happened, millions of disgruntled users, instead of goodwill, badwill, corporate greed and mismanagement.

I miss Stage6, I had made myself a nice collection of interesting material in my channel. I didn’t think of downloading it all since I couldn’t beleive Stage6 would close with 3 days notice. I actually first thought it was a bad joke or publicity stunt.
